Our Mission
Every person including a person with disability (PWD) has the right to live with dignity and grace.
As per Census 2001, Government of India, there are about group, a great number of their rights and
needs remain overlooked and neglected.
Often an individual with disability is considered in isolation. But, in a realistic sense,
it affects the entire family around the person and should, therefore, be considered as family 2.19
crore PWDs in the country. There is growing evidence that people with disabilities comprise between
4 and 8 per cent of the Indian population (around 40 to 90 million individuals). Even though persons
with disability form a sizable disability. Even though most families take great joy in providing care
to their loved ones, the physical, emotional, psychological, medical, social and financial consequences
for the family members can be overwhelming without some support. However, such families end up being the
only people who support and meet the needs of the person with disability. The family has to compensate
for the lack of resources and inaccessibility of the resources in the society. This contributes to
situations of high stress and unreasonable burden for the family. The stress and burden of care further
lead to decreased access to resources, alienation and, at times, neglect of the person with disability.
The Government of India’s efforts to provide all possible support to persons with disabilities for giving
them an opportunity to “live with dignity” and also making their lives meaningful,
productive and enabling them to become potential contributors of the society through various statutory
provisions and social security schemes are laudable. However, the issue of physical assistance and personal
care support remained an area of concern. Hence, the concept of “Sahyogi” came into existence to provide,
promote, create and maintain pool of care givers for persons with disabilities. It aims at bringing joy,
smile, life on own terms, adding “wings to mobility” and “being productive citizens”
for persons with disabilities and “carrier opportunity” for literate as well as illiterate
unemployed segment of the society.
